The African Development Bank (AfDB) has committed US$2.5 billion to fund critical infrastructure projects in Tanzania, with over 70% allocated to transport-related developments such as roads, railways, and airports. According to Eng. Mumina Wa-Kyendo, Chief Transport Engineer at the AfDB Tanzania Office, the funding targets priority upgrades that will improve regional connectivity and logistics.

Among the key projects is the Tanzanian segment of the 400-kilometer Bagamoyo–Pangani–Tanga–Horohoro/Lunga Lunga–Mombasa–Malindi road, part of the larger Coastal Transport Corridor stretching from Lamu in Kenya to Mtwara in Tanzania. AfDB has allocated US$100 million for this road, which is expected to reduce the travel distance between Dar es Salaam and Tanga by 90 kilometers, easing coastal transportation and trade.

Additional projects include roads in western and southern Tanzania, the Tabora–Kigoma–Uvinza railway line extending to Burundi, and the construction of Dodoma’s Msalato International Airport. EAC Director of Infrastructure Eng. Achieng emphasized that the broader goal is to enhance the region's transport corridors, with support from AfDB, other development partners, and member states, as part of East Africa’s strategy to strengthen regional trade and integration.
