Rorya — An estimated 480 households have been connected with solar power free of charge at Manila village in Rorya District. The project has been undertaken by American Engineering Group Limited (AEG) in collaboration with Mashaka Foundation.
"I am indeed happy to see that 480 households have light, thus changing the lives of villagers," said John Mashaka, the founder of Mashaka Foundation. "We have given them everything free of charge and our aim is to change their lives, said Mashaka, a Tanzanian living and working in the United States.
He said he was pushed to support the initiative after visiting the village where people were still using the locallymanufactured oil lamps. Availability of power has also helped to end the problem of hyenas roaming in the village.
"The initiative has relieved students from using small lamps when studying at night. Manila has made a history as the first village to benefit from the Firefly solar technology that was designed by experts in the United States.
In a bid to improve living standards of villagers, AEG and Mashaka Foundation have also supported implementation of a water project at the village. The water project was official inaugurated by last year.
