East Africa : PV diesel hybrid system for industry

Posted on :Thursday , 10th March 2016

Together with the PV diesel system expert OneShore Energy GmbH, BayWa r.e., a renewable energy subsidiary of BayWa AG, is implementing a joint photovoltaic diesel hybrid system for an industrial customer in East Africa.

OneShore Energy (link is external) will provide the software solution to optimise the integration of the solar energy system with a diesel based power plant. At the same time, BayWa r.e. (link is external) will supply the components for the PV system. The software of Berlin based OneShore Energy will aim to reduce the costs for planning and can also be used for the management of the plant.

With the help of such a PV diesel hybrid system, the fuel use of the customer is reduced, which means that besides reducing CO2 emissions, there are less costs and dependencies for the customer when it comes to transporting the fuel to the diesel generator. According to the company, their software can reduce diesel consumption in systems with weak grids and in off-grid systems by up to 40 %.

"If the grid is already weak, fluctuating solar power presents an additional challenge. Our software solution addresses this problem by analysing the consumption data and using it to generate the optimum PV diesel hybrid system for the site in question," says Philipp Kunze, Managing Director of OneShore Energy. The company’s target audiences are for example food producers, breweries, production plants and hospitals.

The project in East Africa is part of the worldwide dena Renewable Energy Solutions (RES) Programme coordinated by the German Energy Agency dena and co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy within the initiative „renewables – Made in Germany“. The dena RES Programme supports renewable energy companies entering new markets to promote the worldwide acceptance and use of renewable energies.
