Dar es Salaam — Five regions in Tanzania have been connected by the newly technology (4G LTE) that will see internet communication faster and more efficient.

LTE is a 4G wireless communications standard developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) that's designed to provide up to 10x the speeds of 3G networks for mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, netbooks, notebooks and wireless hotspots.

The availability of 4G LTE will facilitate video conferences and Skype calls, thus improving communication services in Tanzania.

The five regions are Dar, Arusha, Tanga, Dodoma and Morogoro. According to Tigo, the telecom service provider, it plans to cover the entire country by ends of next year.

"We are through for this year, Tigo Chief Commercial Officer, Shavkat Berdiev said, adding that next year will be Mwanza, Zanzibar and Moshi with the ultimate goal to cover the entire country by the end of next year.

Tigo 4G LTE is five times faster than the 3G that is currently in the Tanzanian market.

Meanwhile residents of Morogoro region have been asked to prioritize the use of digital information technology so as to conform to the fast-growing global digital lifestyle.

Addressing the participants duing the official launch of the Tigo 4G LTE services in Morogoro recently, Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Rajabu Rutengwe said digital knowledge will ensure that the region and indeed the entire country had a tech-savvy society.

Rutengwe said with a technologically-advanced society, faster and efficient social-economic development will be achieved and added that the government will support all the efforts geared towards technological growth.

"The government of Tanzania is continuing to improve the legal and institutional frameworks to ensure that there are better services and at affordable prices in the communication sector," Rutengwe said.

Rutengwe added the government recognizes the contribution made by the private sector in the growth of the national economy and lauded Tigo for its new 4G technology that will make internet communication faster and more efficient.

"The launch of the Tigo 4G means there will be higher internet speeds in Morogoro that will facilitate video conferences and Skype calls, thus improving communication services in the region," he said.

The RC said: "I call upon the residents of Morogoro region to take advantage of Tigo 4G so as to simplify their digital communication requirements."

On his side, Mr. Berdiev, said Tigo customers in Morogoro will now have the opportunity to enjoy world-class experience of increased speed and higher quality internet access in their mobile phones and laptops.
