Ampersand, the top electric vehicle (EV) energy technology firm in Africa, has tripled its production capacity in Kenya with the opening of a new, larger manufacturing facility in Nairobi. With more than 1,100 Ampersand e-motos currently in service, this strategic expansion allows it to satisfy the nation's fast growing demand for electric motorcycles.
With a floor area of 21,000 square meters, the new plant is more than three times bigger than the old 6,500 square meter location. With this major renovation and the addition of more than 100 employees, Ampersand will be able to continue providing the most reliable battery swap network for Kenya's millions of commercial motorcycle riders and construct up to 60 electric motorcycles every day, or 1,440 per month.
Ampersand's eco-friendly EV solutions reduce carbon emissions while providing riders with substantial cost savings. An important benefit for Kenyan riders, who on average support 3.8 people at home, is that each Ampersand e-moto reduces CO2 emissions by at least 2 mt per bike annually and, on average, boosts customer income by 45% annually.
At the moment, Ampersand's fleet of intelligent, AI-optimized batteries and heavy-duty commercial e-motos travels more than 4.5 million kilometers a week between Nairobi and Kigali combined. The company's recent expansion puts it in a position to satisfy the rising demand for electric bikes in Kenya and throughout East Africa, where 100 million people rely mostly on gasoline-powered motorcycles for delivery or taxi services. By 2033, Ampersand wants to have 5 million electric motorcycles on the road.
"In terms of scale and influence, our new factory in Nairobi is a significant advancement. It demonstrates our commitment to offering cost-effective, environmentally friendly EV solutions that directly benefit both drivers and the environment. We are better equipped to support the electrification of commercial motorcycle transportation in Africa and grow Ampersand's successful business model with this increased capacity." Ampersand CEO Josh Whale stated.
By making our EV energy infrastructure and technology widely available, Ampersand, Africa's top EV energy technology firm, is reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean economic success.
In addition to saving its clients money, Ampersand's more than 4,000 zero emission e-motorcycles also improve air quality and people's health. The business is expanding its customer-focused services and climate-led innovation to other markets and companies.
