Jumaa Aweso announced recently the 28-Urban Water Project in Songea, Tanzania, at the event for the signing of the agreement for the project's establishment between both the government and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CHICCO). Mr. Aweso is the Water Minister, who was depicted by Deputy Minister Maryprisca Mahundi.According to the contract, the initiative will boost Songea Urban Water and Sanitation Authority's (SOUWASA) regular water use from 11.58 litres to 42.581 litres over a 32-month period commencing March 10 of this year.
The grand water project, he contended, will address the municipality of Songea's water shortages. The project seems to have the capacity to supply water to 440,794 people. This also virtually guarantees the accessibility of water.Nadhifa Kemikimba, the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, stated before the contract was signed that after the project is completed, Songea's citizens will be provided until 2045, when the municipality's population will exceed 400,000.
He highlighted the projects currently undergoing, including the construction of a 4.8 million litre dam, a 16 million litre per day treatment plant, 9 million litre water reservoirs, and a 10.5-kilometer pipeline from the dam to the reservoirs.Over 800,000 kilometres of piping systems for consumer distribution will also be implemented. According to Kemikimba, this appears to be the case. The government will carry out the 28-Urban Water Project in Songea. It will consider regions in which water supply services have still not managed to reach the people.The feasibility studies for such project will be accomplished in nine months.
The regional commissioner for Ruvuma, Col. Laban Thomas, hailed the government for ensuring that the region's citizens have the opportunity to drink safe and clean water.He stated that the Ruvuma Region has made significant progress in delivering safe and clean water. He also mentioned that the service has managed to reach 80.95 percent. He furthermore stated that Songea Municipality has obtained 90 percent at 22 hours per day.Dr. Damas Ndumbaro applauded the government for allocating financial resources for the development of the proposed system. Dr. Ndumbaro is the Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs and a Songea Urban Member of Parliament.
