In order to validate occupational standards in crucial sectors for the expansion of the industrial economy, more than 100 experts and delegates from Tanzanian government institutions, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, and industry representatives started a two-day meeting in the Morogoro Region, eastern Tanzania, on Thursday.

The National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET) has prepared the occupational standards in cooperation with both domestic and international stakeholders, such as the China-Africa TVET Alliance secretariat and Sunmaker, a Chinese company that specializes in skills development for African youth.

Adolf Rutayuga, Executive Director of NACTVET, opened the event by stating that the developed work standards are critical for fostering professionalism, enhancing performance, and enacting change within the workforce.

According to Rutayuga, the workshop will examine and validate the established work standards that will direct vocational education and training in creating and executing programs that address the demands of the labor market and the nation's economic strategy.

He stated that Tanzania is currently developing an industrial economy that requires a large number of skilled workers, and that the prepared occupational standards covered five sectors: construction, transportation, energy, agriculture, and information and communications technology.

According to Zhang Yujia, Sunmaker Tanzania's acting national director, Sunmaker, a Chinese organization that works to provide skills for young people in Africa, started working with NACTVET in 2022 to carry out a number of projects.

According to Zhang, the projects included developing curriculum standards, revising and creating occupational and program development standards, creating digital teaching and learning materials for TVET, increasing the capacity of TVET leaders and staff, and creating joint diploma programs between Tanzanian and Chinese universities.
