There are still opportunities for Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the country, says Mr Andre Kruger, the Public Private Partnership financing specialist of Barclays Africa.

He said government had created a conducive environment by adopting the PPPs policy in 2009. Mr Kruger was speaking at a Barclays Bank PPPs workshop at Cresta Marang Hotel recently.

He said PPPs would help ease pressure on the national budget.

He added that PPP's were not common in many countries except South African and Kenya where such PPPs have built hospitals, water projects and tarred roads. Mr Kruger said Botswana should appoint the head of the PPPs unit.

He noted that there were other sectors that could appoint section advisors to consider major projects that they want to venture into through PPPs.

For her part, the corporate director of banking Botswana, Ms Leslie Bradley said they were prepared for the PPPs and have done one transaction for SADC and were open to partnering with local authorities and other companies through the initiative.
