Posted on :Thursday , 22nd October 2015

Some 1,000 farmers in all wards of Machakos county can take advantage of the free tractor programme.

Speaking when he launched the programme in Machakos town yesterday, Agriculture chief officer Nimrod Mbai said 38 tractors are ready for use.

He said in the next three weeks, all selected farmers will have their farms tilled in readiness for the El Nino rains.

Targeted areas are Masinga, Yatta, Mwala, Matungulu, Kangundo and Kathiani subcounties.

The officer said the beneficiaries will include the elderly, widows and the less fortunate.

Mbai said each tractor will be assigned two operators and will cover eight acres in a day.

"I want to assure you this time round only deserving cases that have already been identified will benefit from the programme," he said.

Mbai said the county government has bought seeds from the Kenya Agricultural Research and Livestock Organisation, which will be supplied to farmers for free.

"The seeds are worth Sh10 million and will be supplied for free."
