Smart Solar Streetlights to Transform Eldoret’s Urban Landscape

Posted on : Monday , 4th May 2026

The Ksh 3.45 million Eldoret Energy Plant and solar-generated streetlights project has been approved by the National Treasury. The project intends to improve dependability, safety, and energy conservation in important public areas while switching Eldoret City's street lighting infrastructure to renewable energy. After a thorough regulatory process, the endeavour’s Capital Information Pack (PIP) was first approved in November 2025, enabling it to move on to a Project Capital Feasibility Study.

The program, corresponding to project details, will entail the construction of a 3MWac photovoltaic solar power plant equipped with a 9MWh standard sized Battery Electricity Storage System, that will power certain municipal facilities and street lighting independently of the national grid and guarantee steady lighting even during blackouts.

The suggestion also calls for installing 90 high-mast towers and almost 12,000 new LED streetlights, transitioning the municipality's current electrically powered street lighting to solar power, and renovating 2,271 broken lights. The new energy from renewable sources system will also be linked to parks, traffic signals, important municipal buildings, and other public facilities.

A new related to technology standard lighting system with adaptable LED streetlights combined with CCTV cameras with facial detection and smart controls will replace the project's conventional bulbs. With the objective to make Eldoret safer, more interconnected, and brighter, the system will also be backed up by a vast subterranean fibre-optic network that will allow for continuous monitoring and predictive maintenance.

The endeavour aims to make the city of Eldoret Town a 24-hour economic hub, with brighter streets aimed to improve safety for the public, and extend business operation hours deep into the night. According to the Uasin Gishu County's Government, the impact is anticipated to be immediate and significant.
