Lifestyle in Kiambu County Is Brightened by Hundreds of Solar-Powered Lights

Posted on : Wednesday , 1st April 2026

In an attempt to decrease the enormous electricity lighting bills that have challenged the county's progress, Kiambu President Kimani Wamatangi implemented solar-powered street lighting. Embracing renewable energy is a calculated step that will significantly reduce the county's yearly power bill expenditures of over a billion shillings.

The modification has also improved the standards of life for the locals, who take pride in increased business hours, improved security, and a conscious effort to reduce expenditure for lights. According to Governor Wamatangi, the wards are also free from frequent blackouts because they are not dependent on the grid.

The KES four hundred million dollars solar lighting project, which will be implemented in three stages, would solarize all of the county's street lights including or switch county-run hospitals and county offices from the national grid to solar power lighting.

The Angaza Kiambu street lighting programs restricted maintenance costs and reliance on the sun and natural light will result in monetary savings for the county. Additionally, solar-powered lights are more resistant to damage.

Governor Wamatangi stated, 'The solar project is in line with SDG 7 on accessible and clean energy lighting." In an effort for reducing climate change, he was hopeful that Kiambu County may be the earliest in the area to go green. The project was vital in attempts to lower carbon emissions worldwide, according to Area Climate Change Administrator Ms. Esther Kaguima. The county's initiatives to boost security and the business environment were praised by the locals.
