CS Promotes Local Industry and Job Creation and Signs Performance Contracts with MITI SAGAs

Posted on : Wednesday , 1st April 2026

A renewed push for national economic delivery was initiated when Lee Kinyanjui, the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade, and Industry, signed Performance Contracts with the CEOs and chairs of State Agencies (SAGAs) within the ministry.

The CS positioned MITI as essential to nation-building by emphasizing that ministry success was a result of teamwork. "We bear a huge responsibility to make the nation work unlocking jobs through value addition and achieving self-sufficiency in consumables," the secretary of state stated.

The CS lamented that counterfeit goods undermining sector stability were the largest obstacle to trade's optimal returns. The CS bemoaned deficiencies in accreditation and property rights protection that expose Kenyan goods and urged the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) and other agencies to "up their game."

The idea was praised as a "noble assignment" for national government delivery by Juliana Yako, Principal Administrative Secretary (PAS) of the Prime Cabinet Secretary's Office. State officers should completely support government initiatives and cascade performance goals through their teams, she said.

The Scrap Metal Council (SMC) promoted domestic industry above exports, pointing out a potential in the 300 tonnes of copper produced locally. Additionally, the CS highlighted unrealized potential in the furniture and wood industries and urged executives to lead presidential directives.

The CS urged leaders to fully embrace their contracts, accompanied by Principal Secretaries Hassan Abubakar (Investments) and Regina Ombam (Trade). "This will make Kenya self-sufficient, ensuring all our consumables are made locally."
