WHO Offers Kenya More Than $2.3 Million in Supplies, Medical Equipment and Ambulances

Posted on : Monday , 8th December 2025

In a ceremony led by His Excellency President William Ruto at State House in Nairobi, the World Health Organization (WHO) offered the Kenyan government vital medical supplies and equipment worth more than $2.3 million.

The complete package, which represents a major investment in Kenya's health infrastructure and emergency response capabilities, was given to President Ruto, the government and the Kenyan people by Dr. Mohamed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

"This is more than a transaction; it is a testament to partnership, purpose and the power of collective action," Janabi said. "Each ambulance, each oxygen cylinder, each emergency kit tells a story: a mother who reaches care in time, a child whose life is protected, a health worker who responds well when every minute matters."

The National Emergency Ambulance Service Center and the 999 emergency response system will be strengthened by the transfer of 14 fully furnished ambulances, including eight advanced life support units. Six ambulances specifically designed to provide reproductive and maternal health services will be sent to the underdeveloped counties of Elgeyo Marakwet, Marsabit, Siaya, Samburu and Tana River, where delays and distance frequently result in fatalities.

In response to maternal mortality, Dr. Janabi stressed that "pregnancy is not a disease. It's a physiological change of the body, so no one is supposed to die." The equipment consists of 952 reproductive and maternal health commodities and equipment, as well as training models intended to enhance obstetric care, family planning services and post-abortion care, especially in remote areas.

In order to guarantee that frontline facilities are ready for outbreaks, medical emergencies and critical care requirements, the package also includes approximately 3,000 emergency prevention and response materials and 230 medical oxygen cylinders.

Representing the WHO's Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) program in Kenya, Dr. Joyce Onsongo displayed 6.5 million pills for the widespread treatment of soil-transmitted helminths and schistosomiasis in 15 counties. "We have been doing this for the last 10 years and this country, through your leadership, is reaching the end of many of these diseases."

"We are implementing comprehensive healthcare reforms in partnership with county governments and development partners to advance the universal health coverage program," President Ruto said, highlighting the government's dedication to changing the healthcare system. Our goal is to guarantee that every Kenyan has access to first-rate medical care.

In addition to strengthening emergency referral care and increasing oxygen capacity, the new resources will help lower maternal and newborn mortality rates in high-burden counties and enhance Kenya's ability to respond to public health risks like cholera and Mpox.

"WHO commends Kenya's commitment to universal health coverage and is proud to stand with Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, county governments and frontline health workers as we build a system where no one is left behind," said Dr. Janabi.
