Kenya`s Kisumu Will See a Significant Expansion of Its Water Network

Posted on : Thursday , 2nd October 2025

With the opening of an enhanced water supply and storage system, more than 25,000 homes in Kisumu City and the surrounding areas will have access to clean piped water as part of the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation (LVWATSAN) program.

The Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency (LVSWWDA) is carrying on the Phase II Lot 1 project, which will add 25 kilometers to the city's water network in Maseno Township and extend it by 156 kilometers.

New storage tanks totaling 1,450 cubic meters will be built in Obwolo (250 m³), Bukna (150 m³), Maseno town (1,000 m³), and Maseno market (150 m³) to bolster supplies.

In order to increase supplies, the project also entails digging a new borehole in Maseno Township and repairing an existing one.

Presidencing the groundbreaking ceremony at Obwolo in Kisumu East Sub-County, Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation Eric Mugaa stated that the Sh8.6 billion program is jointly supported by the Kenyan government, the French

The European Union, the European Investment Bank, and the Development Agency (AFD).
According to Mugaa, the investment is essential to supplying the growing water demand in Maseno and Kisumu, which have seen fast population expansion.

"There are three stages to the LVWATSAN concept. Water and sanitation projects are combined in Phase I, which is currently 90% finished. Water expansion is the main goal of Phase II, which we have already started, and Phase III will upgrade Dunga intake structures and restore the Nyalenda waste treatment ponds, he stated.

To reassure development partners that their investments would not be in vain, the CS also revealed intentions to create bulk water service providers in accordance with the Water Act 2016 to enhance revenue collection and loan payback.

More than 500,000 Kisumu citizens have benefited from AFD's funding of three significant initiatives throughout the years, according to Kessab.

Arnaud Suquet, France's ambassador to Kenya, reiterated France's commitment to aiding Kenya's water and sanitation infrastructure.

Since its inception in 2006, the LVWATSAN initiative has already produced important infrastructure, such as the water systems in Kajulu and Dunga.

The new phase, according to officials, will greatly increase access to water and enhance sanitation throughout the Lake Victoria Basin.
