Posted on : Tuesday , 23rd September 2025

The Tanzania-Zambia Transmission Interconnector (TAZA) initiative is quickly transforming the electricity distribution in southern Tanzania, as the 400-kilovolt Tunduma–Sumbawanga line has reached more than 79 percent completion. The Chief Executive Officer of TANESCO, Mr. Lazaro Twange, stated that the initiative will enhance the reliability of power and promote socio-economic development in the regions of Iringa, Njombe, Mbeya, Songwe, and Rukwa.

On September 18, 2025, Mr. Twange emphasized the effects that the project will have on families, enterprises, and community industries during his visit to Songwe and Mbeya. "Dependable electricity is now a reality for our communities. This initiative represents a significant advancement for regional progress," he added.

Mr. Twange encouraged contractors to quicken their pace to adhere to the planned deadlines, pointing to advancements on the Tunduma–Sumbawanga line, where 171 out of 497 towers have been successfully installed. At the Malangali substation, one of the five that are being developed under TAZA, he pointed out that the project is currently 36 percent complete and urged for increased oversight of contractors to sustain progress.

The CEO also commended President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for focusing on investments in the power sector, emphasizing that her government’s backing is essential for enhancing Tanzania’s energy infrastructure and fostering economic development. Alongside the Tunduma–Sumbawanga line, Mr. Twange evaluated essential infrastructures such as the Iganjo substation located in Mbeya, the Nkangamo substation in Songwe, the Songea–Tunduru substation, as well as the Mtwara 1 and 2 gas power facilities.

He assured the public that TANESCO is dedicated to efficiently completing projects and providing reliable electricity to communities throughout the southern regions. As TAZA approaches its final stages, southern Tanzania stands to gain from better energy access, which will foster industrial development, generate employment opportunities, and improve the living standards for countless residents.
