University of Zambia to spend US$750m in building solar energy laboratories

Posted on : Saturday , 6th December 2014

In a bid that will help meet growing demand for electricity in the countries at the south of Africa, the University of Zambia is planning to venture in constructing solar energy laboratories. Prem Jain, head of energy, environment and research at the university (Energy, Environment and Research Group), has said that the project will also avail an opportunity for students to qualify to work in related fields. This is because it will avail the needed skills.

Students pursuing engineering courses at the University and at Engineering Institute of Zambia will also gain skills to handle environmental-friendly and renewable energy technologies. Zambia is struggling to meet electricity demand, a situation being experienced by other countries at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

Construction of these solar energy laboratories will help cater for rural areas too making them gain access to electricity efficiently.
