President Samia Suluhu Hassan has begun a historic education initiative by laying the groundwork for one of 103 projected vocational secondary schools across Tanzania, with a total cost of 41.6 billion/-. The formal launch was held at Amali-Mwamapalala Secondary School in Itilima District, Simiyu Region, one of the initiative's key schools and is currently being constructed at a cost of 1.6 billion/- and is already 96% completed.
President Samia stated at the ceremony that the administration is prioritising youth skill development to combat unemployment and meet the needs of a developing private sector. The President emphasised the need to reorient the education system so that youngsters emerge with practical, employable abilities.
According to Eng Abbas Kilumile, the Mwamapalala school consists of 13 buildings, including an administrative block, four classrooms, a dining hall, four dormitories (two for girls and two for boys), bathrooms, three workshops (carpentry, masonry, and plumbing), and a staff residence.
According to Mohamed Mchengerwa, Minister of State in the President's Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), the government has disbursed funds throughout all 26 regions to help construct schools in specific local councils.
This project demonstrates the government's strong dedication to youth empowerment. The 41.6 billion/- funding is already being used across the country, noting that councils involved in the initiative have been directed to use a portion of their internal earnings to construct perimeter fencing around the new schools.
Prof. Adolf Mkenda, Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, stated that the first phase would include the construction of 26 schools on the mainland, as well as two technical training institutions in Zanzibar.
