According to recent estimates from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), the Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) supplied more than 57% of Kenya's daily electricity generation to fulfil the country's soaring demand for power.
In a statement, KenGen stated that its hydropower plants contributed 10,915 MWh to the country's output, while its geothermal units generated 13,678 MWh.
Kiambere in particular generated 2,908 MWh, and other hydros, including Gitaru, Kamburu, and Masinga helped to stabilise the nation's total electricity prices by supporting system operations.
"Our dedication lies in providing consistent and dependable baseload power to illuminate our homes and drive Kenya's industrialisation. Our 10-year G2G strategy aims to provide 1,500MW of electricity from renewable sources, such as geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar," stated Eng. Peter Njenga, Managing Director and CEO of KenGen.
According to KenGen, the geothermal power supply was essential to baseload support, supporting the government's plan to increase renewable generation and reduce dependency on costly thermal imports.
Eng. Njenga added, "We are happy to note that KenGen's steady delivery from indigenous resources ensured grid stability, even though the total energy demand for the day stood at 42,943.11MWh, including thermal sources, wind, and interconnectors with Uganda and Ethiopia supplemented generation."
To meet the public's increasing demand for power, the firm also emphasised the urgent need for infrastructure strengthening.
Over 93% of KenGen's 1,786 MW installed generation capacity comes from renewable sources, including wind (25.5 MW), geothermal (754 MW), and hydro (826 MW).
