MojaEV Kenya is set to begin local electric vehicle assembly

Posted on : Tuesday , 6th May 2025

Nairobi-based mojaEV Kenya Ltd., an electric vehicle distributor, will start assembling electric vehicles locally with the goal of exporting them to multiple African markets.

The company will first assemble automobiles through a cooperation with Associated Vehicle Assemblers Ltd., based in Mombasa. Currently, the company imports completely completed Chinese electric vehicles. Eventually, MojaEV intends to open a factory of its own to locally assemble solar and battery components.

As operations increase, MojaEV expects to produce about 300 vehicles each month and 1,500 vehicles annually. The company plans to cut prices for both local and regional clients by building cars in Kenya and avoiding import duties.

Within two months of opening their flagship store in Nairobi, MojaEV, in collaboration with the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer NETA Auto, intended to start local assembly. With a primary focus on models like the NETA V and plans for future models like the NETA AYA and NETA X, the projected output at the time was 250 vehicles per month.

The project by MojaEV represents a significant advancement for Kenya's electric mobility ecosystem and enhances the nation's position as a possible East African hub for EV assembly and distribution.

Models from MojaEV's lineup, such as the Skyworth SUV and Neta EV, are already contributing to the local market's increased awareness of electric vehicles.

MojaEV might increase affordability, generate new job opportunities, and promote skill transfer in the Kenyan automobile industry by switching from imports to local assembly.
