Urko Sanchez Architects has designed a series of temporary classrooms for the Nairobi Waldorf School, nestled within forest clearings to create a village-like atmosphere for children. Wood plays a central role in this project, both functionally and aesthetically, establishing a deep connection with the natural environment. Wooden logs of varying heights wrap around the base of each classroom, helping the structures blend seamlessly into the forest surroundings while also supporting the sustainable ethos of the design.
The 3,160-square-metre development was built using cost-effective and reusable materials such as reclaimed wood, soil, and forest leaves to minimize environmental impact. The overhanging wooden roofs draw from regional vernacular architecture, offering shade and shelter while emphasizing the use of natural resources. A tall, existing wooden structure was repurposed to expand the learning space, further showcasing the project's commitment to adaptive reuse.
The use of wood was not only a practical solution due to the site’s temporary 10-year lease but also a deliberate choice to reduce construction waste and promote future reusability. Wooden elements form both structural and decorative components, reinforcing the ecological and aesthetic intentions of the design.
Complemented by transparent polycarbonate walls filled with layers of forest soil and leaves, the wooden structures foster biodiversity and invite natural light into the classrooms. This thoughtful use of timber and organic materials provides children with bright, earthy learning spaces and reinforces the project's goal of environmental harmony and community participation.
