Bolt Comes over 500 Kenyan Electric Bikes

Posted on : Wednesday , 12th March 2025

With more than 500 electric motorcycles in its fleet, ride-hailing business Bolt has declared a major milestone in Kenya.

Rapid adoption of the partnership, which moved from a pilot model to full scaling up in December 2024, has confirmed that electric bikes are a viable and affordable mobility option in Kenya.

By the end of 2025, Bolt hopes to have 1,500 vehicles in its fleet, substantially increasing the supply of electric bikes to satisfy the market's strong demand.

"With this milestone, we have made great progress toward affordable and sustainable mobility in Kenya," stated Dimmy Kanyankole, General Manager, Bolt Kenya and Tanzania. In addition to being sustainable, the expansion of our fleet of electric bikes provides a financially viable option for drivers to own these vehicles and make a living at the same time.

In order to meet Kenya's demand for electric vehicles, the program has also tested the resilience of battery swap infrastructure, demonstrating the need for more battery capacity and charging stations in Nairobi, the country's capital.

Mr. Kanyankole continued, "This is a promising indicator for the future of electric mobility not only in Kenya but also in Africa." "We can scale these initiatives further, lowering costs and emissions and increasing access to sustainable transport throughout the continent with the right infrastructure and partnerships."

Bolt believes this accomplishment highlights the possibility for similar projects in other African markets and beyond, opening the door to a more affordable and sustainable urban mobility scenario as it continues to extend its electrification operations.
