Dar es Salaam Residents to Benefit from Knee and Hip Surgeries

Reporters in Dar es Salaam were informed by Abdulmalik Mollel, executive director of Global Medicare and one of the organizers of the medical camp, that Dr. Ram Mohan Reddy and his team, a hip and knee surgeon from Yashoda Hospital in India, will collaborate with regional experts at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH)-Mloganzila branch.

The specialized care will be provided at the Mloganzila in Dar es Salaam, according to Mollel, who also mentioned that Dr. Reddy and his group will collaborate with regional experts to strengthen Tanzanian physicians' abilities through experience-sharing.

He said the partnership intends to give more training so that in the future, local doctors will be able to undertake these surgeries on their own.

He pointed out that Tanzanians in need of medical attention had to go overseas for a very long time. However, many Tanzanians are now obtaining care domestically thanks to large government investments in the health sector.

Mollel emphasized that the government has made significant investments in cutting-edge medical technology and has trained a large number of superspecialists in a variety of disciplines.

Modern technologies and highly skilled professionals on par with those in India and other nations are now available in Tanzania. Thus, it is a good time for medical professionals with training from outside Tanzania to work alongside Tanzanian specialists who have been doing a great job," added Mollel.

He stated that Tanzania's high standard of medical care has drawn patients from nearby nations who would otherwise have to go further and spend more money and time getting treatment elsewhere.

"There is a great opportunity with the presence of these medical professionals. Their experience will help our doctors, and if we have the abilities they don't, our local practitioners will teach them. Tanzania is emerging as a center for medical tourism in East Africa and outside of the Sahara Desert because to government investments in the healthcare industry, said Mollel.

With 4,000 beds, Yashoda is one of the biggest hospitals in the world and is well-known for its high standards. A group of Tanzanian medical professionals came to Yashoda in May 2023 to learn more about what makes the organization unique. "We discovered the reason behind patients' global preference for treatment in India," he stated.

Mollel added that the delegation's objective is to learn from YASHODA's success as a global leader in medical tourism and apply comparable strategies to improve Tanzania's standing as a hub for the industry.

"The arrival of doctors from Yashoda, a hospital renowned for its first-class quality and standards and its extensive global network due to its expertise," he continued, "was one of the successes of our visit to India last year."

He underlined that the ultimate objective is to make Tanzania a top medical tourism destination, backed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan's large expenditures in medical technology and the training of local physicians via the Samia Scholarship program.
