Electricity construction project in Sudan gets funding

Electricity construction project in Sudan has received a boost after a US$ 200m contract was signed with the East Sudan Development Fund and the companies which won the implementation tender that will be used in the generation of electricity in East Sudan region.

First Vice-President General Bakri Hassan Salih, the Minister of Water Resources and electricity Mutaz Musa and a number of senior officials witnessed the signing and Bakri said that linking the east with the national electricity network grid would lead to stability, sustainability of development and enhancement of agricultural and industrial revival.

The contract included an agreement with the Sudanese Company for Transport valued at US$165 million provided by a Kuwaiti loan, a US$ 73m agreement with the Chinese Company ‘Chiang’ and a third agreement at US$ 5.6m with the national company ‘Switch’.

The electricity construction project in Sudan which is expected to be fully functional in the next 18 months will see 600 villages connected with electricity.

The East Sudan Development Fund was established following the signing of a peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the rebels of East Sudan Front in 2006. It seeks to enhance cooperation between the three eastern states of the Republic of Sudan; Kassala, Red Sea and Al Qadarif.
