Algeria records increased imports in construction materials

National Statistics and Data processing centre (CNIS) has reported that the quantity of imported construction materials in Algeria increased by 15.6% in 2014.

According to the report, imported quantities of main building materials such as wood, cement, iron, ceramic and aluminium rose to 10.13 million tonnes in 2014 from 8.92 million tonnes in 2013, representing a 15.6% increase.

The cement industry imports’ bill increased by 28.4% to reach a total of $513.67m in 2014, compared to US$400.08 m in 2013.

The need for cement in Algeria has increased due to increased infrastructural needs.

The leading importers of products from Algeria include Spain, Italy, France, Britain, Netherlands and United States. Some of the leading product suppliers in Algeria include China, Spain, Italy, Germany and United States.

Iron and steel are the leading imported materials in Algeria. The country has come up with several measures to encourage national production and encourage building firms to purchase locally produced construction materials.

Algeria largely depends on the oil and gas industry as its main source of revenue, with earnings of more than 97% of the total exports which boosts the local economy.
