Ultra Modern Stadium Planned in Kenya

Posted on : Saturday , 24th January 2015

Government in conjunction with Netherlands firm set to put up ultra modern stadia in three counties

A team of stadium experts from Netherlands and Kenya, yesterday visited the site where the High Altitude ultra-modern stadium is set to be built in Eldoret.

The project is part of the Jubilee government's pledge to construct the five high altitude stadiums in different parts of the country.

Sports Kenya, The Stadium Consultancy (TSC) of Netherlands and local consultants did a feasibility study on the land where they facility will be setup.

TSC managing director Venbrink Benjamin, said they intend to put up a stadium with a sitting capacity of between 20,000 to 30,0000

"It will be a huge task to undertake and that is why we are on the ground conducting the site analysis," Venbrink noted. He said they need a site which will make the stadium economically and environmentally sustainable.

"This will be a high performance training center and we need to factor in many things like parking, power, road network and how much the stadium will generate in terms of income among other things," Venbrink added. According to him, the stadium will be IAAF certified and this will mean more benefits to athletes due to its high altitude location. He said sporting facilities which are currently not in the country will be availed at the stadium for fine-tuning of athletes.

Many of the foreign athletes including Britain's double world champion Mo Farah has been training in Kenya."We will be having sports science here and there will be no need for athletes to travel abroad to fine tune themselves. This will give rise to sports medicine, science and many other things," he added.

Sports Kenya interim chairman Ibrahim Hussein said the feasibility study report will be out in the next six months and will be followed with a detailed design.

Hussein said the team will move to Nairobi and Mombasa to conduct the same exercise before the construction works kicks off.

"All the feasibility study says that the three stadiums will be done and released in the next six months. We have given it enough time so that we can get everything right and even the experts have recommended that way," Hussein said.

He said the stadium needs not less than 150 acres of land since there will be many facilities to be constructed. Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago welcomed the idea, saying the county will fully support the project. He said once complete, they will use it to market the region since it will be a real complex.

"This has given us more hope that one day we will host an international championships here. We are glad the project will get our support," Mandago said.
