The anticipated Sh21 billion Thika and Githunguri Water and Sanitation Project in Kiambu County will be funded by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).
The government announced the plan at the beginning of this year, and it is expected to increase access to water for 1.2 million people in the Thika and Githunguri areas.
The construction and restoration of water storage tanks as well as the installation of roughly 60 kilometers of water transmission and distribution pipelines, including consumer last mile connections, are all part of the multibillion dollar project, which is expected to begin in February of next year.
This project, which will be carried out over the course of five years in four phases, will also assist schools, colleges, and health facilities where many people have been without water.
One of the Danish agency team's representatives, Mike Hutson, stated during the tour that the project will play a significant role in improving the standard of living for residents in Kiambu County.
The fundraising phase is coming to an end, and we expect the contractor to start work in February of the following year. Before the project is ready for commissioning, it will take about 30 months to finish, Hutson said.
The Thika project will receive 15 billion of the 21 billion dollars, he said, while Githunguri town's water supply and sanitation will receive 6 billion.
According to estimates, the project will provide Thika, a town that just became a city, with an extra 70,000 cubic meters of water per day, which will cover the metropolitan area's water needs until 2047.
