Tanzania: 'Enrol for Health Insurance Cover'

Tanzania Insurance Brokers Association together with Association of Tanzania Insurers jointly hands over a dummy cheque of 20m/- to disaster coordinator from Prime Minister's Office, Mr Edger Senga during their awareness walk yesterday.

MEMBERS of the public have been advised to enrol themselves in health insurance arrangements so that they can be helped in case of natural disasters.

The call was made in Dar es Salaam yesterday by a member of Tanzania Insurance Brokers Association (TIBA), Ms Fikira Ntomola, shortly after an awareness walk organised by Tanzania Reinsurance Corporation Limited (TANRE) and the Institute of Finance Management (IFM).

The awareness walk was aimed at motivating members of the public to enrol in health insurances together with raising money for last Saturday's quake survivors in Kagera Region. A total of 20m/- was realised.

"The plan for this walk was originally meant for awareness creation about insurance. However, in view of the events that happened in Kagera last weekend, we planned to collect some amount to help our beloved friends and relatives in the region," said Ms Ntomola. She said natural disasters normally occur abruptly, but with insurance your properties and health will be assured.

She added that Tanzanians should build a culture of joining the health insurance agencies to be assured of health services when disasters occur. The Association of Tanzania Insurers (ATI) Vice-Chairman, Mr Charles Sumbwe, urged business people to secure their businesses with insurances.

He said that the move would help them to cover damages that happen during calamity incidents. "Insurance is an engine for national development as it provides businesses with the protection needed for them to embark on risky ventures.

Moreover, insurance helps businesses and individuals who suffer losses and brings them back to a position that they are able to pick up again," said ATI Vice-Chairman.

He, however, reminded industry players to strive towards improving their service values and they should provide products that are affordable to the public.

In his word of thanks shortly after receiving the 20m/- check, a disaster coordinator from the Prime Minister's Office, Mr Edger Sanga, called upon other well-wishers to extend support to the victims.

The tremor left 17 victims dead, over 250 hospitalised and destroyed more than 800 homes and other buildings.
