BG Tanzania Donates $ 280,000 to Health Care

BG Tanzania, a firm that deals with the exploration performance, a unique LNG business, and ability to fast-track the development of economic projects oil around the world last week announced that has donated a total Tsh.602,000,000 ($ 280,000 to lift up health services in Mtwara region (600 km) from Dar es Salaam.   

An official communiqué of which a copy was availed to East African Business Week indicates that Mtwara has a very high prevalence of Malaria and other tropical diseases such as Dengue and “Chikungunya” and that St Mary’s dispensary is one of a few medical practices in Mtwara.

The communiqué reveals that BG Tanzania has committed the donation to St. Mary’s dispensary (Ndanda Ndogo) at Shangani Ward, Mtwara Municipality.  The funds will be used to support three main streams of development namely pre hospital care and ambulance services, emergency care and resuscitation unit and capacity building to manage common medical emergencies, trauma and snake bite management.

“An estimated 1.3 Million people within the Mtwara region are expected to benefit from the improved health services and the company is working in partnership with the St Mary’s Dispensary to ensure that the funds will go towards emergency and health care initiatives to aid the entire community,” the statement said. BG Tanzania made the announcement at a ceremony officiated by the District Commissioner, Hon. Fatma Salum Ally who represented the Regional Commissioner, together with the BG Tanzania Head of Health, Safety Security and Environment (HSSE), Stevenson Murray.

Also present were Sr. Raphaela Handler, Dr. Geofrey Mahwa and the St. Mary’s dispensary staff. The Mtwara District Commissioner, Hon. Fatma Salum Ally lauded the company for supporting the health care efforts of Mtwara.

Speaking at the event, the BG Tanzania Head of HSSE, Stevenson Murray said BG Tanzania was working collaboratively with Mtwara Region and the St Mary’s Dispensary to provide needed support and interventions in various areas.

“Through our Social Investment programmes we are also undertaking long term interventions designed to support communities to address the key challenges they face in a sustainable manner. This more comprehensive long term approach means we are contributing to addressing some of the underlying causes that trigger emergency situations,” Murray said.

Sr. Raphaela speaking on behalf of St. Mary’s Dispensary Management said that the health care facilities will provide a platform for directly addressing health care needs by improving public health care in Mtwara and that the donation makes a contribution to raising the health status of the community by rehabilitating health care facilities and providing basic equipment.

“We have a strong monitoring and evaluation unit which will be instrumental in ensuring efficient and effective implementation and use of the equipment,” said Sr. Raphaela Handler, Head of St. Mary’s Dispensary, Mtwara.
