Sh3.2 billion set aside for Eldoret – Lokichar road, to ease transport of oil

Posted on :Friday , 12th August 2016

Cabinet approved Sh3.2 billion for the upgrade of Eldoret (Leseru) – Lokichar Road during a special sitting on Thursday.

The carriage way is envisioned to facilitate movement of crude oil from Turkana to Mombasa, from where it will be exported.

The road will be used to move 2000 – 4000 barrels oil per day as state prepares to commercialise the mineral.

The Cabinet also approved the upgrade of Kainuk bridge to ease movement of large trucks that will be used to transport the crude oil.

The oil will be transported in trucks from Turkana to Eldoret, after which it will be moved to Mombasa via the railway.

During the meeting, the ministerial budget priorities for the Financial Year 2016/17 were also approved.

President Uhuru Kenyatta further directed ministries to commence implementation of the projects immediately.

The cabinet was also briefed on the preparations for the forthcoming TICAD 6 conference scheduled to take place in Nairobi later this month.

The country was banking on a pipeline but those plans faced hurdles when Uganda pulled out of the bilateral deal over security concerns.
