President William Ruto recently unveiled the Nairobi River Regeneration and Engineering Works Programme, which will cost Sh50 billion. The project involves the installation of a 60-kilometer sewer line and 50,000 cost-effective housing in reclaimed regions. The project will be implemented collaboratively by the Nairobi Rivers Commission and the Ministries of Housing, Environment, and Defence.
President Ruto hailed the initiative as a life-changing endeavor that will provide thousands of citizens with dignified living conditions, sustainable transportation, and economic empowerment. He made the remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony for affordable housing and accompanying infrastructures along the Nairobi River in Nairobi's Kamukunji constituency.
The President stated that the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project combines inexpensive housing, contemporary markets, and improved infrastructure to make the city more habitable and economically operational. The project, which covers Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, and Murang'a, includes river rehabilitation, flood prevention, waste management, and sewage lines, with the goal of enhancing public well-being and urban resilience.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki stated that the Nairobi Regeneration Project will ensure the city's three rivers are clean. Kindiki stated that the work will also improve the city's sewerage infrastructure to safeguard people from contamination or inconvenience caused by floods.
Earlier, on a tour of development projects in the Kamukunji Constituency, the President praised the close collaboration between the National Government and the Nairobi County Government on development. He complimented the county for investing in a contemporary field at Desert Grounds in California, stating that the facility will provide adequate room for recreational activities, talent development, and interaction. He also reviewed the 4,566-unit Shauri Moyo B Affordable Residence Project in Makadara Constituency, which is still under construction. President Ruto emphasized the importance of upgrading and modernizing Nairobi, the country's capital and the only United Nations headquarters in the Global South.
