The Kenyan Cabinet has approved a Ksh43.4 billion project called the Clean Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System, which will transform public transportation in Nairobi County. Following a €320 million (Sh43.4 billion) financial package, the government will connect Ngong Town and Tala to enhance public transport reliability.
The project will include the comprehensive design and building of the bus corridor, as well as the construction of a bus depot, the purchase and acquisition of zero-emission electric buses, the construction of bus stops, and the monitoring, ticketing, and management facilities. The Clean Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will include a cashless fare collection feature, which is exceptional in the county, as well as real-time passenger information. The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) is going to oversee the system, which will also include GPS-based car tracking and park-and-ride services.
Construction will be done in stages, with the first stretching 12 kilometres from Kenyatta National Hospital along Juja Road to Dandora. After completion, the second phase will link Dandora to Tala and Kenyatta National Hospital to Ngong. This project is financed by the EU, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and the European Investment Bank.
The Nairobi County administration has a broader strategy that includes improved walkway infrastructure, smart technology to aid traffic flow, and non-motorized transportation options. The BRT system is part of the government's aim to dramatically reduce commuting times while also lowering greenhouse gas emissions in the county.
