Kenyans divided on William Ruto lighting thatched huts

Deputy President William Ruto is in the coast region for a tour that includes launching of various projects including his trademark last mile project and opening the Law Society of Kenya conference.

Fresh from a trip to Rio de Janeiro where he cheered Team Kenya, the DP travelled down at the Coast as he lays the groundwork for President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is expected to start a tour of the region from Saturday, August 20.

Uhuruto are keen on eating into the Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s support in the area that is perceived as a Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) stronghold, ahead of the 2017 general election.

It will be remembered that the coast region overwhelmingly voted for Raila in the last elections (read 2013) with Uhuru while on a tour of the region in December 2015, even reminding the residents that they did not support him during the polls.

‘Coincidentally,’ Raila is also touring the region as he also consolidates his support and also popularises his party Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as he ramps up support for his bid to be the Cord’s flag bearer.

But it is photos of Ruto launching an electricity programme in one of the homes in Rabai area on Thursday, August 18, that has had the Twittersphere talking.

Kenyans are largely divided, as Tuko notes, on the project, with one faction terming it a PR exercise while others believe the government is determined to light every homestead in the country.

Critics are baffled by the state of the houses the project has been done.
