Kenya Evaluates Merck's Collaboration in Biotechnology and Regional Pharmaceutical Production

Posted on : Friday , 6th November 2026

As part of measures to enhance domestic health-sector capacities, Kenya is investigating increased cooperation with Merck Healthcare and Life Science in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, regional manufacturing and capacity building.

Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, Chairman of the Merck Foundation, organized a group from Merck that visited to Dr. Ouma Oluga to discuss possible areas of collaboration and investment in Kenya's health sector.

Opportunities to improve pharmaceutical and biotechnology capabilities, increase local production and cultivate specific expertise required to maintain an environmentally friendly healthcare system remained the main topics of discussion.

Dr. Oluga emphasized the value of collaborations that promote the transfer of knowledge and technology, boost local competence and open doors for increased domestic production of vital health items.

The involvement is a component of the government's larger initiatives to draw in strategic health investments, encourage innovation and boost Kenya's ability to satisfy its healthcare demands in a sustainable manner while developing a stronger and independent health system.
