Tanzania is strengthening efforts to promote sustainable management of forest resources, with growing attention on reducing pressure on forests while creating new opportunities for the wood and biomass industries. The approach supports environmental conservation, climate action and the development of sustainable alternatives that can make better use of wood-based resources.
The Tanzania Clean Cooking Programme (TCCP) Programme Manager, Fredrick Tunutu, highlighted the importance of reducing deforestation and protecting ecosystems through more sustainable resource use. These efforts can contribute to a healthier forestry sector by encouraging efficient use of wood resources and supporting the development of alternative biomass products.
An important development is the growing use of wood waste and sawdust as valuable raw materials. Hanny Mbaria, Managing Director of Hanny G Investment Ltd, said her company produces biomass fuel using agricultural and wood waste, including sugarcane residues and sawdust. This approach creates additional value from wood-processing residues while supporting more efficient resource utilisation.
The company currently produces 120 to 150 tonnes of biomass fuel per day and employs more than 145 workers, with the majority being youth and women. The development demonstrates how wood residues can support new industrial opportunities, employment and value addition while reducing waste from agricultural and wood-processing activities. Tanzania's forestry conservation efforts are also closely linked with biodiversity protection and sustainable land management.
The country's broader nature-positive initiatives focus on reducing deforestation, protecting biodiversity and addressing land degradation, creating an environment where responsible forestry and sustainable wood production can develop alongside ecosystem conservation. With continued collaboration between government institutions, private companies and development partners, Tanzania's sustainable wood and biomass sector has strong potential to contribute to green economic growth.
