Kenya is accelerating the development of its sustainable wood industry with a Sh161.8 billion (US$1.25 billion) financing package from the World Bank. The investment is expected to strengthen forestry programmes, support climate-resilient development and promote the responsible management of Kenya’s forest resources.
The funding is set to provide fresh momentum to forest restoration, tree planting and sustainable forestry initiatives across the country. By expanding forest cover and improving the management of existing resources, Kenya can strengthen the long-term supply of sustainable timber for its growing wood industry.
According to Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary, State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, sustainable forestry and increased tree planting are important parts of Kenya’s environmental restoration and economic development agenda. Greater community participation in forestry can also support local employment and strengthen livelihoods linked to wood resources.
A stronger forestry base is expected to create opportunities throughout Kenya’s timber and wood-processing value chain. Sustainable timber production can support sawmills, furniture manufacturers, carpenters and other wood-based businesses while encouraging the responsible sourcing of raw materials.
The investment will also support value-added wood processing, reforestation and sustainable timber production, helping Kenya develop a more resilient domestic wood sector. Improved access to responsibly sourced timber could benefit the construction and furniture industries while encouraging greater value addition within the country.
With continued investment in forestry and sustainable land management, Kenya’s wood industry is gaining an important foundation for long-term green growth. Stronger forest resources, expanded timber production and increased community involvement can help the sector contribute to environmental conservation, employment and rural economic development while supporting Kenya’s climate-resilience goals.
