The government of Tanzania is aiming for an extra 122 megawatts (MW) from ongoing and planned solar projects, increasing the country's use of solar energy in the production of power. Salome Makamba, the deputy minister of energy, made the announcement earlier today in the Dodoma parliament, pointing out that the action is a part of initiatives to increase generation capacity, bolster a dependable and sustainable electricity supply, and lessen reliance on a single power source.
Ms. Makamba was answering a query from Special Seats MP Ambassador Dr.Pindi Chana, who wanted to know how the government intended to employ solar energy. In response to the inquiry, the deputy minister stated that Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) is carrying out a number of renewable energy initiatives.
The government's Generation Mix strategy, which seeks to diversify the sources of power generation, is being implemented in tandem with the measures, she continued. The moment, the national grid receives 65MW of electricity from solar sources, with 15MW coming from small power producers (SPPs)," she stated. After Phase Two of the Shinyanga Solar Power Project is finished, an additional 100MW is anticipated, she continued. She noted that three SPP projects that are nearing completion would provide an extra 22MW
According to the Deputy Minister, the government's larger plan to boost the share of clean energy in the production of electricity while guaranteeing a dependable and sustainable power supply includes investments in renewable energy. She added that the nation's reliance on a single source of power generation will be lessened by diversifying the sources of generating.
