Tanzania is increasingly exploring alternative energy solutions as it seeks to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels. Among the options gaining attention is electric mobility, which has the potential to support a gradual transition away from conventional petroleum-powered transportation.
Recent developments have contributed to growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs) among Tanzanian consumers, particularly electric two- and three-wheelers. As the country looks for cleaner and more cost-effective transportation options, EVs are emerging as an alternative to traditional vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (ICEs).
Electric mobility is reshaping transportation systems globally and offers potential economic, environmental and social advantages. Replacing conventional petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles with electric alternatives can help lower local air pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions, especially when EVs are charged using electricity generated from clean and renewable energy sources.
For Tanzania, the transition towards electric mobility could contribute to its climate-related objectives while helping vehicle owners reduce their expenditure on fuel and maintenance. Greater EV adoption could also decrease the country's dependence on imported petroleum products and generate new opportunities for businesses involved in vehicle assembly, servicing, charging infrastructure, battery-related services and other e-mobility activities.
The global electric-vehicle market has grown considerably over the past decade. This expansion has been supported by falling technology costs, increasing consumer demand and government policies aimed at encouraging cleaner forms of transportation.
The trend has been particularly strong in the electric two- and three-wheeler market, a segment that is highly relevant to Tanzania because of the important role these vehicles play in everyday transportation.
Data from the AfEMA Data Portal 2025 indicates that Tanzania had more than 10,000 electric two- and three-wheelers, giving it the highest combined number of electric two- and three-wheelers in East Africa.
The expansion of the sector has also attracted at least 10 companies into Tanzania's e-mobility market in recent years. These companies see considerable potential in the country's relatively open market and its large existing fleet of conventional vehicles, many of which could eventually be replaced or converted to electric technology.
As the electric-mobility sector expands, Tanzania is also making progress in developing the technical skills needed to support it.
Institutions such as Arusha Technical College (ATC) are contributing to this effort through education, research, testing and technology-transfer initiatives focused on e-mobility.
ATC has introduced training programmes covering renewable energy and electric mobility, helping build local expertise for the safe installation, testing and operation of electric-mobility systems.
The institution has also been recognised as a Centre of Excellence for research and training in renewable-energy generation and applications. This expertise could help strengthen Tanzania's technical capabilities and support the broader adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
