$77.4 Million Iron Mining Initiative Hits Major Milestone

Tanzania has taken a major step toward domestic iron production as the $77.4 million (or $77.45 million in subsequent official documents) Maganga Matitu iron ore development in Njombe Region's Ludewa District transitions into its construction phase. Being executed as a collaborative joint venture between Tanzania's National Development Corporation (NDC) and China’s Fujian Hexingwang Industry Tanzania Co Ltd following an investment pact established in August 2024, the venture aims to supply crucial raw materials to local steel manufacturers and minimize reliance on foreign metal imports. Director General of the NDC, Dr. Nicolaus Shombe, revealed that heavy machinery and crushing equipment began reaching the 19.63-square-kilometer site on January 19, 2026, marking the start of initial land preparation and infrastructure development, which was further boosted when the site was officially integrated into the national power grid on August 12, 2026. The operational lifespan of this ambitious mining venture is projected at 25 years.  

Based on findings from the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s 2025 budget report, comprehensive feasibility studies uncovered an estimated 100 million tonnes of inferred iron ore reserves boasting a 44.6 percent iron concentrate, along with 11.2 percent titanium oxide and 0.41 percent vanadium pentoxide. Once operational, the facility is designed to generate an annual output of one million tonnes of raw iron, 100,000 tonnes of titanium concentrate, and 483,000 tonnes of tailings. Prior to launching full-scale physical construction, community displacement concerns were addressed by the Ludewa District Council, which concluded property evaluations for 385 affected individuals, allocating Sh4.2156 billion in total compensation. Beyond fulfilling the national objective of strengthening domestic industrial processing, the project is anticipated to generate significant economic momentum across the region. The Ministry estimates that it will create 1,000 job opportunities—comprising 300 direct mining positions and 700 indirect roles—while simultaneously opening up ancillary commercial prospects for local businesses offering security, transport, construction supplies, and general logistical support.
