Tanzania and Korea Ink a $9 Billion Pact to Improve Dodoma’s Water Services

A project to enhance water services and lower water losses in Dodoma City and Bahi District has received a 9 billion rupee grant from the Government of the Republic of Korea.

An agreement for a water pipeline project was signed by Ms. Eun Ju Ahn, the ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Tanzania, and Engineer Mwajuma Waziri, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Water, with the goal of enhancing water distribution and lowering water losses in Bahi District.

The initiative is anticipated to benefit around 437,200 people, including residents of Dodoma City, Bahi Sokoni, Ibihwa, and Mpalanga villages in Bahi District, according to Ms. Mwajuma Waziri, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water, who launched the project in Bahi yesterday.

In order to guaranty that every drop of water produced reaches the appropriate customer, the effort will build and enhance infrastructure to reduce water losses.

Speaking at the launch, Engineer Waziri stated that the money was given as a grant under the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), a partnership between Tanzania and the Republic of Korea, with the intention of assisting the nation in reaching its development objectives, especially in the water sector.

She stated that increasing the effectiveness of water services and lowering water losses—which are now at 33.7% and cause large financial losses—were among the government's top priorities in the water sector.

"I want to underline that the government expects all projects carried out with public funds or in partnership with development partners to follow the values of accountability, transparency, integrity, quality, and value for money. Reducing water losses is our objective here, and we have to succeed," she stated.

Residents of the villages of Bahi Sokoni, Ibihwa, and Mpalanga were urged by Ms. Waziri to collaborate with the government and organizations carrying out the project.
