Tanzania Invests TSh 40 Billion in Road Lighting Ahead of AFCON 2027

Posted on : Tuesday , 4th August 2026

Tanzania is strengthening its preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations through a TSh 40 billion investment in road lighting across Dar es Salaam and Arusha, reinforcing its commitment to world-class infrastructure and sustainable urban development.

The project, which will enhance lighting along important roads routed between airports, arenas, hotels, commercial centers, and other key areas that will accommodate players, officials, supporters, and visitors during the tournament, was introduced by Minister in Charge for Works & Infrastructure Abdallah Ulega during the discussion of the budget that the government estimates in Parliament.

Road lighting is a vital component of modern transport infrastructure. Beyond improving visibility for motorists, it enhances pedestrian safety, supports smoother traffic flow, and contributes to a more efficient transport network during both day and night. Well-lit roads will provide a safer and more comfortable travel experience while improving access to accommodation, entertainment venues and tourism destinations.

In addition to its practical benefits, modern street lighting enhances the visual appeal of a city. Illuminated roads, intersections and public corridors create an attractive night-time landscape that reflects the country's continued investment in urban development.

The road lighting programme aligns with Tanzania's broader infrastructure agenda, ensuring that investments made for AFCON 2027 deliver lasting value beyond the tournament. Long after the final match, the upgraded lighting network will continue to improve road safety, support local businesses, facilitate tourism and enhance the quality of life for communities in Dar es Salaam and Arusha.

By investing in resilient and modern lighting infrastructure today, Tanzania is creating a lasting legacy. The project highlights the country's focus on smart urban development, improved mobility and sustainable infrastructure that will benefit residents and visitors for years to come.
