Consortium Steps Up to Challenge China's Rare Earth Dominance with Kenyan Venture

Posted on : Tuesday , 4th August 2026

Critical Metals Corporation, serving as the lead party for the Mrima Earth Consortium, has successfully advanced to the final stage of the Kenyan government's competitive tender process for the development rights to the high-value Mrima Hill rare earth and niobium project located in Kwale County. Selected as one of three final U.S. contenders from an initial pool of seven international bidders, the consortium is well-positioned to secure this pivotal mineral asset. This advancement comes at a critical juncture for global supply chains, given that China currently controls approximately 90% of global rare earth production and has signaled a shift toward prioritizing its domestic market needs. At the same time, global demand for rare earth permanent magnets—which power critical green and defense technologies such as electric vehicles, wind turbines, and military defense systems—is projected to expand fourfold to sixfold by the year 2040. Addressing these geopolitical and market dynamics, Critical Metals highlights that Mrima Hill represents a natural and highly complementary addition to its portfolio, sitting alongside its flagship Tanbreez rare earth project in Greenland to further consolidate its Western-aligned rare earth strategy.

In partnership with ASX-listed European Lithium, which holds roughly a 31% equity interest in Critical Metals, the Mrima Earth Consortium commands a substantial combined market capitalization of approximately $1.5 billion and maintains cash reserves exceeding $400 million, alongside backing from prominent institutional investors. This strong capital structure ensures full funding throughout both the project development phase and Phase 1 plant construction. To maximize execution speed, the consortium is employing an accelerated development methodology that integrates parallel engineering, environmental permitting, and procurement workflows with early contractor deployment and fast-tracked procurement of long-lead equipment, designed to achieve commercial production and cash flow generation significantly ahead of conventional schedules. Beyond basic extraction, the consortium's vision spans the entire rare earth value chain, ranging from initial concentrate production to separated rare earth oxides and the ultimate manufacturing of high-value neodymium-praseodymium magnets. Supported by an experienced technical team with a proven track record in developing rare earth ventures, the consortium aims to establish Mrima Hill as the anchor of a regional rare earth refining hub, stimulating job creation across East and Southern Africa. Critical Metals Chairperson Tony Sage emphasized that reaching this final selection stage marks a defining milestone for the company, affirming that Mrima Hill is precisely the caliber of world-class, strategically located asset the company was formed to pursue alongside Tanbreez.
