Tanzania Strengthens Wood Energy Sector Through Sh3 Billion Briquette Investment

Posted on : Wednesday , 1st July 2026

Tanzania is advancing its sustainable wood energy and forestry sector through increased investment in alternative biomass products and responsible resource utilization. Speaking in Tabora on February 21, 2026, Anthony Mavunde, Minister for Minerals, emphasized the government's commitment to expanding the availability of clean and sustainable energy solutions while supporting environmental conservation efforts.

As part of this initiative, the newly launched Rafiki Briquettes Factory is expected to enhance the country's wood energy value chain by converting coal based and biomass resources into efficient fuel products. The facility has the capacity to produce 20 tonnes of briquettes per day, helping to diversify Tanzania’s renewable energy mix and reduce pressure on natural forests.

Mavunde noted that the factory, represents an important investment in sustainable energy infrastructure. The project is expected to support industries and communities that require reliable fuel sources, while contributing to improved forest resource management and reduced environmental degradation.

Dr Venance Mwasse, Managing Director of STAMICO, said the facility was established to provide a long-term solution for energy users that have traditionally relied heavily on wood fuel. He added that broader adoption of briquettes can help promote more efficient use of forest resources and support national efforts to address challenges associated with deforestation and changing climatic conditions.

According to Dr Mwasse, the Sh3 billion investment covered the acquisition of machinery, renovation of buildings, and all activities required for establishing the factory, with funding sourced from STAMICO’s internal revenues.

The development highlights Tanzania’s growing focus on sustainable wood energy, forest conservation, and value-added biomass products, creating new opportunities for the country’s forestry and renewable energy sectors while supporting long-term environmental sustainability.
