The government has obtained a €20 million (approximately Sh60.7 billion) grant from Germany to improve water supply and sanitation services in Tunduma and Vwawa Mlowo in Songwe Region as part of a pact aimed at increasing access to clean water and enhancing public health services in rapidly growing urban areas. The agreement was signed in Dodoma at Kambarage Hall, Treasury Square, by Dr Natu El Maamry Mwamba, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Paymaster General; and Vanessa Eidt, Director of the German Development Bank, KfW, Tanzania. The funds will go toward the building and extension of water distribution systems, residential connections, a wastewater treatment plant, sanitary infrastructure, and public toilets in schools and other institutions, as well as the purchase of exhauster trucks to better waste management.
Eng. Mwajuma Waziri, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water, emphasised the critical timing of the project, noting that climate change and rapid urban growth have placed immense pressure on existing infrastructure. She assured that the ministry will maintain strict oversight to guarantee a transparent, timely, and high-value execution for the citizens. Highlighting the broader relationship, Germany’s Deputy Ambassador to Tanzania, Manuel Muller, along with Vanessa Eidt, confirmed that the water sector remains the cornerstone of German development support in the country, backed by over €400 million in ongoing cooperation. This enduring partnership ultimately reflects a shared commitment to sustainable development, with a continued focus on expanding water access and preserving vital biodiversity.
Dr. Mwamba stated that the investment strengthens Tanzania-Germany cooperation and directly aims to improve living conditions by providing reliable access to safe water and sanitation. He stated that German help continues to play an important role in crucial sectors such as water, health, the environment, public financial management, and gender equality, all of which contribute to national development priorities. He noted that the project is consistent with Tanzania's long-term development objective, which includes Vision 2025, Vision 2050, and the country's current and next five-year development plans.
