Local Inclusion and Conservation Take Center Stage in Turkana Mining Forums

Posted on : Monday , 1st June 2026

The Turkana County Government, through the Department of Mining, has increased its efforts to promote responsible and inclusive mining by holding public engagement forums at the Kalomwae and Juluk mine sites in Aroo Subcounty. The forums brought together local residents, government officials, stakeholders, and Kaliao Construction and Supplies Limited representatives to debate projected mining activities, community participation, environmental conservation, and the benefits of mining investments in the region.

During the interactions, County Mining Deputy Director Elim Areman emphasised the need of responsible and inclusive mining operations, pointing out that land belongs to the community and that investors must collaborate closely with local inhabitants to achieve mutual benefit. He emphasised the need of environmental conservation, safety measures, and community ownership in protecting local interests and ensuring that mining investments benefit communities. Aroo Subcounty Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Dennis Barasa also led the forums, calling for peaceful coexistence, increased security, and strict respect to mining regulations to assist the area's long-term development.

The engagements also allowed Kalomwae and Juluk communities to express their opinions, concerns, and expectations about the proposed mining activities, with officials reiterating the County Government's commitment to transparency and community involvement in the sector. The County Government continues to support responsible mining practices with the goal of creating economic opportunities and enhancing livelihoods in local communities throughout the county. Other attendees included Eregae Micklam, Chairman of the Turkana Artisanal Mining Committee; Ekal Lokuruka, County Legal Officer; Alfred Lomodei, Aroo Subcounty Administrator; Erod Wilfred, Revenue Officer; and the OCS of Aroo Subcounty.
