Tanzania’s construction industry continues to strengthen its position as one of the country’s most dynamic economic sectors, playing a central role in advancing national development and infrastructure transformation under the Fourth Five-Year Development Plan (FYDP IV).
Contributing 12.8 percent to the country’s GDP and recording strong growth in 2024, the sector has emerged as the leading performer within the industrial landscape. Its expansion highlights the growing importance of construction as a catalyst for economic progress, job creation, and long-term development.
The industry is at the heart of several landmark projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), major energy developments, special economic zones, urban housing initiatives, and large-scale industrial investments such as the Liganga–Mchuchuma project. These projects underscore the sector’s critical role in delivering the infrastructure needed to support Tanzania’s industrialisation ambitions.
Looking ahead, FYDP IV aims to increase the construction sector’s contribution to GDP to 15.5 percent by 2031. The plan also promotes the adoption of sustainable construction practices, positioning the industry as a key driver of inclusive and environmentally responsible growth.
Recent growth has been supported by significant public investment in transport, energy, ports, bridges, and urban infrastructure. Rapid urbanisation and a housing deficit estimated at 3.8 million units continue to generate strong demand for residential, commercial, and public-sector construction projects. Additionally, the government’s planned infrastructure investment of approximately $45.8 billion under FYDP IV provides a substantial pipeline of opportunities for the sector.
The sector is embracing modernisation through initiatives aimed at expanding the use of advanced construction technologies, digital project management systems, and innovative building methods. Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important focus area, with plans to introduce a comprehensive green building framework and encourage the use of renewable energy, climate-resilient infrastructure, and environmentally friendly construction practices.
With strong government support, a robust project pipeline, and ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing competitiveness and innovation, Tanzania’s construction sector is well-positioned to remain a major force behind economic transformation, industrial growth, and infrastructure development in the years ahead.
