Jumaa Aweso, the Minister of Water, presented the National Assembly yesterday with a budget estimate of 1.12 trillion/-for the fiscal year 2026–2027, of which 93% is set aside for development.
The action demonstrates the government's commitment to making the water industry a major contributor to the national economy. If authorized, the Ministry's budget will rise from roughly 898.28 billion in the current fiscal year to 221.92 billion (24.7%).
Mr. Aweso stated that the requested monies will allow the Ministry to achieve seven critical goals, including expediting the completion of ongoing water projects to ensure timely service delivery.
According to him, the Ministry intends to finish 26 sanitation projects, 196 urban water supply projects, and 992 rural water supply projects in 2026–2027.
In order to use dependable sources, such as lakes and rivers, to distribute water to regions experiencing shortages, Mr. Aweso continued, the government will also complete the National Water Master Plan.
The minister added that in order to increase the amount of water available for social and commercial purposes, measures to collect rainwater will be stepped up.
He stated that the construction and renovation of 33 dams, the design of 34 additional dams, the environmental impact assessment of two dams, and the promotion of rooftop rainwater collection will be prioritized.
He stated that building and repairing dams will continue to be essential to bolstering national water security. "These measures aim to enhance water reliability in areas with limited permanent sources, reduce the effects of drought and climate change and ensure adequate water supply for domestic use, livestock, agriculture, industry, and other development activities."
