Coca-Cola Invests USD 1.94 Million to Improve Tanzania's Water Security

Posted on : Wednesday , 1st April 2026

In order to rehabilitate the Ruvu Basin, a crucial water source for Dar es Salaam, the Coca-Cola system in Tanzania is investing USD 1.94 million.

With a population of around 9 million, Dar es Salaam serves as the commercial hub of Tanzania and serves as a vital link for businesses, farms, and communities throughout eastern Tanzania.

The initiative's main goals are to restore catchment areas, enhance water replenishment using natural alternatives, and promote more sustainable water management in the Ruvu sub-basin's Ngerengere catchment.

Additionally, it seeks to improve watershed management capabilities, aid in the restoration of degraded catchment areas, and encourage water stewardship.

Under the direction of the Global Water Challenge (GWC) and carried out by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in collaboration with the Wami-Ruvu Basin Water Board (WRBWB), the project intends to provide at least 2,000 farmers with tangible benefits, such as tree planting and the adoption of more climate resilient livelihood practices.

This project is a component of the Coca-Cola system's Africa Water Stewardship Initiative, which was introduced in 2024. By 2030, the project will have invested close to USD 25 million to help local people in 20 African nations handle serious water-related issues.

Water scarcity is a clear indicator of the world's growing water insecurity; in certain places, the demand for safe, useable water exceeds availability, and future scarcity issues are expected to worsen.
