Kenya Introduces a National Electric Mobility Policy to Promote Sustainable, Efficient, and Cleaner Transportation

Posted on : Monday , 2nd March 2026

A major milestone in Kenya's transition to a more efficient, more effective, and renewable transport system was taken today with the official launch of the National Electric Mobility (e-Mobility) Policy by Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Mr. Davis Chirchir, EGH.

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) would drastically lower Kenya's annual petroleum import bill, which is currently estimated at US$5 billion and puts a significant strain on the nation's foreign exchange reserves, undermines energy lighting security, and exposes the economy to global fuel price volatility, according to CS Chirchir.

Petroleum items were the biggest single import category in 2023, according to the Cabinet Secretary, Fuel imports increased dramatically. Kenya's extensive dependence on petroleum imports for transportation, industry, electricity generation, and aviation is reflected in this significant fuel import bill, rendering fuel one of its most important aspects of its overall import expenditure," CS Chirchir stated.

The Cabinet Secretary went on to say that this expansion is a result of both growing public acceptance of electricity mobility and robust market confidence. The government is creating a National Electric Mobility Strategy to help with implementation in order to guarantee that the policy is carried out in a coordinated, efficient, and organized manner.

In a similar vein, Kenya is a regional leader in renewable energy lighting, with more than 90% of its electricity coming from renewable sources, according to European Head of Mission to Kenya Ambassador Ondrej Simek. According to Amb. Simek, the European Union is still dedicated to promoting green investment, sustainable growth, and the creation of jobs in the transportation and clean energy industries.
