Kenya Power has expressed its approval of the energization of the Sondu–Ndhiwa–Homa Bay–Awendo 132kV transmission line by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). The company stated that this project will greatly enhance the reliability of electricity supply in South Nyanza and certain areas of the South Rift.
The transmission line was activated on Wednesday at 4:07 PM, establishing a more robust power supply pathway into the area, alleviating stress on overloaded segments of the grid, and enhancing the overall stability of the network. As stated by Kenya Power, the energisation occurred after the successful completion of construction activities and commissioning tests carried out in collaboration with KETRACO to guarantee safe integration into the national grid.
After the activation, Ndhiwa started to receive electricity directly from the Sondu generation facility, alleviating pressure on the previously burdened Muhoroni–Chemosit transmission line and ensuring a stable supply throughout the broader area. Kenya Power observed that, for the first time in recent times, the region encountered peak hours without the need for load management. In the past, certain customers in South Nyanza and South Rift experienced rotational power outages as a result of transmission limitations.
Dr. (Eng) Joseph Siror, the Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Power, characterized the project as a significant enhancement of the grid in the area. "This is an important upgrade to the Nyanza and Western grid. It strengthens the supply pathway into the region, eases pressure on overburdened areas of the network, and enhances reliability, voltage stability, and the experience for customers," he commented.
The utility company reiterated its dedication to collaborating with sector agencies, such as KETRACO, to enhance the national grid and guarantee a reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity supply.
