Government Launches Major Dual Carriageway Construction in Mbeya Region

Posted on : Monday , 2nd February 2026

The Tanzania Government is pushing forward with major road construction projects in Mbeya Region, spearheaded by the development of a 29-kilometre dual carriageway between Uyole (Nsalaga) and Ifisi, along with the expansion of a bypass at Mlima Nyoka on the TANZAM Highway. These projects are designed to improve traffic flow and enhance road safety.

The dual carriageway is being built by China Henan International Cooperation Group Co. Ltd (CHICO), under the supervision of the Tanzania Engineering Consulting Unit (TECU). The construction contract alone is valued at more than Sh138 billion, excluding VAT, while the overall project cost exceeds Sh183 billion. According to Tanroads Mbeya Regional Manager, Mr Justin Mrope, the road works are part of the broader TANZAM Highway upgrading programme.

To make way for construction, 117 residents from Iyunga, Iwambi, and Nsalala wards have been compensated a total of Sh3.4 billion. Tanroads has also set up grievance-handling committees to address any project-related concerns within 14 days, ensuring community issues are resolved promptly.

Once completed, the new dual carriageway will feature two lanes on each side, pedestrian walkways, and street lighting. The improved infrastructure is expected to ease congestion in Mbeya City, reduce accidents, and improve safety and security, especially at night.

At the same time, construction has begun on a bypass at Nyoka Hill, a steep and accident-prone stretch of the TANZAM Highway. The new bypass is intended to divert heavy trucks that often experience mechanical problems while climbing the hill, leading to traffic jams. The project will also include rest areas for drivers to improve road safety and efficiency.

Tanroads officials say environmental and social factors are being carefully considered during construction, with consultations involving local communities, elders, and traditional leaders to protect important natural and cultural sites. Chief Rocate Mwashinga praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of strong transport infrastructure for development.

Mbeya Regional Tanroads Manager Mr Suleiman Bishanga emphasized that the Sixth Phase Government continues to prioritise transport infrastructure constructions to boost trade within the SADC region. He noted that the TANZAM Highway remains a vital corridor for regional trade and travel, and the new works will significantly reduce delays caused by stalled vehicles on steep sections. Road users have been urged to follow safety guidelines during the construction period.
